Texas accident attorney, Texas injury lawyerIn March, Vulto Creamery expanded its recall to include all of its cheese products currently in the market, including the following cheeses: Andes, Blue Blais, Hamden, Heinennellie, Ouleout, Miranda, Willowemoc, and Walton Umber. These cheeses were sold nationwide. The reason for this recall is that the company’s cheese contains the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause illness and death.

The Dangers of Listeria

Listeriosis, which is an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, can lead to serious illness, particularly in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, chills, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues. One of the major issues with Listeriosis is that it can lead to dehydration. It is also highly dangerous in pregnant women. While the expectant mothers may not become ill, this bacteria can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and serious illness or death in newborns.

Texas accident lawyer, Texas injury attorneyAccording to a study recently published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, laundry detergent packets have led to a rise in chemical burns in children’s eyes. From 2012 to 2015, popular detergent pods increased the number of eye chemical burns in young children by more than 30 times. In the three-year period, more than 1,200 three- and five-year-olds suffered burns to their eyes because of puncturing the wrapper that contains the liquid detergent. The concentrated chemicals meant to remove stains can squirt into the child’s eyes or get on their hands, which they then wipe on their face and eyes. While there were 12 ocular burns to toddlers in 2012, there were 480 in 2015, demonstrating that this is a fast growing and serious problem.

Detergent Pods Incredibly Dangerous

While many cleaning products are harmful to children and anyone’s eyes, the researchers of this study stated that these detergent pods are particularly dangerous. The laundry detergents “are among the worst chemicals that the eye can be exposed to," stated Dr. R. Sterling Haring from Johns Hopkins University. The detergents are alkaline chemicals and are what the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration labels corrosives since they cause visible and irreversible destruction to materials and tissue. While these types of chemicals in diluted forms can be great cleaners, in concentrated forms they can cause more severe burns, even worse than those caused by acids.

Texas injury attorney, Texas accident lawyerIn September, one Texas woman was in a minor car accident. Instead of her airbag protecting her, the defective equipment detonated, sending shrapnel into her car. Metal and plastic pieces struck the woman in the arms and chest, causing her serious injuries. The Texas woman is suing Honda and the U.S. subsidiary of Takata. Her lawsuit claims Takata knew the airbags used in her vehicle as well as many others were defective and dangerous. This is hardly the first Takata airbag-related injury. More than 150 people have sustained injuries and 11 Americans have died due to the defective safety equipment.

Takata Airbag Recalls

Honda is not the only vehicle manufacturer affected by defective Takata airbags. These airbags have been placed in a variety of models for 14 automakers. Manufacturers have recalled numerous vehicle models made between 2002 and 2015 because the airbags can explode, causing serious injuries or death to the vehicle’s occupants. The source of the issue is that these airbags use ammonium nitrate-based propellant without any drying agent. When the environment is humid or moist, the bag’s inflator, which is a metal cartridge, ruptures. That is why the explosion can include metal shrapnel that can lead to deep lacerations and eye injuries. Overall, more than 100 million vehicles around the world have been recalled, starting in late 2014.

Texas defective product lawyer, Texas personal injury attorneyIn late October, Peg Perego USA recalled children’s riding vehicles due to a fire and injury hazard. According to an announcement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company recalled 3,000 of the 850 Polaris Sportsman toy vehicles. The vehicle uses a 24-volt battery and is intended for kids between the ages of five and seven. The toys were sold in stores and online between October 2014 and May 2015. Due to the circuit board failing, the motor overheats and can ignite, causing a fire and burn hazard. There have been at least three reports of children using the toys when they have overheated, and one of these includes burn injuries.

If your child has this model of a Peg Perego children’s riding toy, you should immediately stop using it. Your child could be hurt. However, if your child has already suffered an injury because of this toy vehicle or another Peg Perego model, contact the New Braunfels personal injury attorneys of the Bettersworth Law Firm immediately.

Defective Product Law

Texas injury attorney, Texas defective product lawyerParents of children who are teething understand the struggle of calming their children and easing their pain. When infants have their baby teeth coming in, they can be uncomfortable, fussy, and unable to sleep. Parents who need their babies to rest so they can get some shut-eye may turn to over-the-counter products to soothe their children’s achy gums, such as homeopathic teething tablets and gels. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently warned parents against these products, asserting that these homeopathic remedies may be related to multiple children’s deaths and injuries. You may desperately want a quick fix to your child’s pain, but the FDA recommends getting through teething without OTC products or medications.

If you child was harmed by a teething or other OTC product, call a personal injury attorney as soon as possible to learn about your legal options. You may be able to hold the maker of these products responsible for the injuries and pain your child has suffered.
