baby gate injuriesParents use baby gates to help protect children from falling down stairs and keep them safe from other injuries. But a recent study reveals that those baby gates are responsible for almost 2,000 trips to the emergency room every year because a young child has received a baby gate-related injury. The study was performed by the Center for Injury Research and Policy and published in Academic Pediatrics. Researchers used data that was collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System between the years 1990 through 2010. The data revealed that there were approximately 37,673 children, seven years old or younger, who were taken to the emergency room for injuries they received that were related to a baby gate. That is an average of five children per day injured, or 1,794 per year. Over 60 percent of the children who were treated for injuries were less than two years old. The most common cause of injury for this age group was falling down stairs because the gate collapsed. The most common type of injuries received were strains, sprains or other soft tissue injuries. Traumatic brain injuries were also common in the under two year group. For children who were between the ages of two and six years old, the most common type of injuries received were cuts from climbing on the gate or other contact with it. The study also discovered that the rate of injuries spike dramatically within the study’s timeframe. In 1990, there were 3.9 per 100,000 children injured, but that rate had quadrupled by 2010, with 12.5 per 100,000 children injured in baby gate-related accidents. Lead researcher, Dr. Lara McKenzie, suggested there needs to be a greater effort of educating consumers on the correct way to use these products, as well as design changes in the gates’ designs in order to reduce injuries. She also suggested making voluntary standards, which are issued by the American Society for Testing and Materials, mandatory standards. PTSD, Texas personal injury lawyer, personal injury attorney in New Braunfels, car accident lawyerrecent study concluded that when a parent has been injured, their child may be at risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study was conducted by researchers from University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, who examined 175 parents and their school-aged children who were patients at a Seattle trauma center.

The primary cause of accidents bringing parents and children to the hospital was motor vehicle accidents. This was followed by falls and burns.

The researchers looked at four different groups:

slip and fall, personal injury, Texas injury lawyer, New Braunfels attorneyAccording to a report from the Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association (ISSA), there are more than one million restaurant customers who sustain injuries from slip and fall accidents every year. They also report that 3 million restaurant employees are injured every year in slip and fall incidents. These injuries are costing the restaurant industry over $2 billion annually. Other studies the group cites in their report indicate that the number of combined injuries is growing by at least 10 percent each year.

The owners of these businesses have a responsibility to ensure that their establishments are safe for visitors. Regular inspections of the entire location should be done to ensure there are no hazards that could cause patrons or employees to slip and fall.

The report recommends that restaurant owners select high-traction flooring that is slip-resistant. Owners should also make sure that any carpets or mats are not wearing away or lose. It is recommended that the difference between any flooring and mat or carpet should be no more than one-fourth to one-half inch in order to avoid creating a tripping hazard. Any cleaning products used on flooring should be specifically slip-resistant.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it is requiring the makers of the sleeping aid Lunesta to change the recommended starting dose on the product. Studies have shown that there may be high enough levels of the drug left in patients the morning after that could possibly impair any activity that requires alertness and focus, such as driving. This side effect may be present even in patients who feel as if they are fully awake.

Currently, the recommended starting dose is two milligrams. But the FDA has ordered manufacturer Sunovion Pharmaceuticals to change the labels and the patient medication guide to now reflect a recommended starting dose of one milligram. If needed, then the dosage may gradually be increased.

According to a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately nine million people in the U.S. take a prescription sleeping aid to help fall asleep. Last year alone, nearly 55 million sleeping aid prescriptions were dispensed by pharmacies across the country. Two of the most popular drugs prescribed are Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Ambien (zolpidem).

Last year, the FDA reduced the recommended dose for women by half for Ambien and other sleeping aids that contained zolpidem. Ambien users have reported issues with amnesia and erratic behavior while using the drug.

A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed that more than 24,000 children are injured in shopping cart accidents every year. Almost 21,000 of those injured are children under the age of 5 years old. Almost 80 percent of the injuries children receive are to their head and face.

The study looked at emergency room statistics from 2008 to 2012. During that time, over 107,000 children younger than 5 years old were treated for injuries sustained from a shopping cart. Sixty percent of those children were 1 and 2 years of age.

The study used the following definitions to describe what the hazard was with the shopping cart that caused the injuries:
